What Is Retinol (And Can It Make Your Skin Better)?

by | Mar 1, 2022 | Facials

Do you feel overwhelmed when you walk down the skincare aisle or shop online for the latest facial products? There are so many creams, potions, and lotions that it’s almost impossible to know what’s best for your skin.

You know your skin needs nourishment, especially during the cold, dry Colorado winters. Just in case you haven’t heard, we’re here to let you in on a little skincare secret — retinol.

What is retinol? What does it do for your skin? And what do you need to know about this powerhouse of a skincare product? Keep reading to learn more!

What Is Retinol Anyway?

Retinol is derived from Vitamin A — the same fat-soluble vitamin you find in favorites such as eggs, carrots, and sweet potatoes. Here are just a few of the things this essential nutrient does for your body:

  • Maintains a healthy immune system
  • Preserves eye health and vision
  • Supports bone, organ, and reproductive health
  • Promotes healthy cell growth and regeneration

This all sounds great, but what does this have to do with your skincare routine?

What Does Retinol Do for Your Skin?

Retinol (in the form of retinoids) is a common ingredient in many skin care products. Dermatologists have been using it since the 1940s because of its long list of potential benefits, including:

  • Boosting skin cell turnover
  • Exfoliating and improving skin appearance
  • Evening skin tone and texture
  • Reducing fine lines and wrinkles
  • Stimulating collagen production
  • Battling acne breakouts

Studies support the claims that retinol can dramatically improve your skin’s appearance. Does this mean you should rush out and stock your shelves with products containing retinol?

What Should You Know About Retinol?

When it comes to retinol, you need to view it as a marathon — not a sprint. Packing on too much retinol too quickly can irritate your skin, dry it out, and make you more sensitive to sun exposure.

Your best bet is to start slowly and let your skin gradually acclimate to this powerful ingredient. Use a tiny amount (no larger than a pea) for your entire face. Apply it to cleansed skin before bedtime twice a week, to begin with. Gradually you can work up to using retinol products every other night, then every night.

Experts recommend allowing 20-30 minutes for your skin to absorb the retinol before applying any other products. You’ll also want to make sure you use sunscreen during the day (something you should be doing anyway)!

Finally, be patient. You’ll need to use retinol consistently for 8-12 weeks before you’ll see those amazing results we talked about earlier.

Important note: If you live in a humid, low-altitude locale, you can probably use retinol every day. If you live in a drier climate or at a high altitude (or both), you may need to limit the number of retinol products you use. And if you’re visiting the mountains from sea level and you plan to get a facial treatment, you should discontinue using retinol for at least 10 days before your appointment.

As always, if you have any questions or doubts, talk to your dermatologist about the best solutions for your skin.
